Lawrence Nussbaum is a life-long sustainability advocate and multi-talented strategist with 20 years of demonstrated leadership helping mission-driven businesses and organizations create meaningful impact through innovative social and environmental sustainability initiatives. Adept at strategy, implementation, partnership, and communications, Lawrence has implemented numerous projects throughout his career focused on using the power of the marketplace, along with comprehensive assessment and transparency tools, to drive and reward social change, conservation, and sustainability.
Lawrence was a leader in the development of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for the wood products industry, built out the regional Salmon-Safe certification program for watershed friendly food, wine, and land use practices in the Pacific Northwest, rolled out a successful organic food delivery service in the Bay Area, and managed several market-based sustainability initiatives in agriculture, textiles, mining/minerals, and green building for a variety of clients. He co-founded and co-directed two community-based NGOs (Northwest Natural Resource Group, Stewardship Partners) and has led partnership, business development strategies, and communications for organic food companies (Full Circle Organics, Eating with the Seasons), a social-impact technology company (The Open Label Project) and a leading sustainability consulting and certification firm (SCS Global Services).
Lawrence has consulted with multinational corporate clients, private landowners, NGOs, local government, and federal agencies on implementation of sustainability strategies. His work has been featured in national media outlets, including several personal appearances and he presents on related topics at various conferences and professional gatherings around the world.
Lawrence holds a Masters in Forest Science and Social Ecology from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a BS in Environmental Science from the University of Vermont.
Sailing, skiing, and the great outdoors have always provided inspiration, along with film, music, and food. A passionate chocofile, Lawrence is also the Education Director for the Northwest Chocolate Festival, Seattle, the largest gathering of craft bean-to-bar chocolate makers and related educational content in North America.
